Any thoughts on the newly released TOCA?

Particularly in relation to PGR2 ?

Is it a driving sim like PGR2 as opposed to an arcade racer ?
Are the graphics as good ?

For those of you into your driving games who have both; which do you
prefer and why ?

Many thanks

Firstly, IMHO PGR2 is not a race sim, it IS an Arcade Racer.

TOCA2 graphics are indeed as good as, if not better than PGR2, but I'm still
disappointed in TOCA2.

TOCA2 is supposed to be a sim; "The Ultimate Racing Simulator" they claim,
yet:
- You can't drive it in manual!
- The physics model is de-tuned for multiplayer (lighter car, more grip,
less spins - aka easier to drive).

The best thing about TOCA1 (or "V8 SuperCars Race Driver" as it's called
here) was tweaking the setup of the TVR and getting another 3 or 4 tenths
around Mt Panorama.... In manual. That was a simulator... More "GT3" than
any XBOX title so far.

Don't get me wrong, if you feel satisfied that PGR2 is a 'simulator' then
you'll love TOCA2... I'm just too much of a purist when it comes to race
sims - I've been known to play TOCA1 over PGR2 just for the need to
simulate!

I wonder - have you by any chance been playing PC games for while also
and if so do you know the game SportsCar GT? How would you compare that
to TOCA 2 (apart from the graphics of course which is old but sufficient
in SportsCar GT once you apply the show damage patch)?

Nice

I'm still needing 40 something in Platinum but getting there - slowly.
Not much time to play lately:-)

I used to play SCGT a lot. Very similar for physics and for fun factor.
TRD2 (TOCA 2 is actually the game in the series that came out several years
before the first Race Driver game) is very drift friendly, something which
wasn't really the case with SCGT. But then I am only playing in the default
arcade mode, I have not bought the bonus codes to unlock the sim mode.
Still it's kind of tame in the handling department, a bit overly grippy, and
just like SCGT you can brake way too late and count on the speed sensitive
steering to save you. It's kind of a "sim lite" IMO, in that it has some
sim-like setup options and sort of has a cockpit view but it doesn't have
the depth of more hardcore sims. Frankly I think that PGR2 has a more
convincing handling model, even though clearly the grip in PGR2 is much
higher than reality. But PGR2 *feels* more real to me, it responds to
control inputs in a more realistic manner than TRD2 does (but again I can
only compare to the default handling in TRD2, not to the sim mode). Still,
if you liked SCGT I think you would like TRD2 also. Realistic cars and
tracks and a fun career mode make it a worthwhile game for any racing nut,
IMO.

If you want a sim...check out Indycar Series 2005.
That is a serious sim.
